The novel takes as its starting point the chance discovery of a letter that throws

\nWorld War. Thus begins the search for the truth that will lead the protagonist
\nto discover the true causes of death: the sinking of the ARANDORA STAR, a
\nShip loaded with Italian internees torpedoed by Germans on July 2, 1940. They drown
\n446 Italian civilians, including many Garfagnana people who emigrated to the UK, victims
\nInnocents of suspicion and xenophobia<\/p>\n
